Presidents Message

Welcome

.

I am honored to serve as President of the Society Incorporated, Supporting the Arts – Los Angeles Chapter.  This year marks the 30th year anniversary of our chapter serving the youth of Los Angeles.  Our mission is to support the youth of today in their artistic endeavors through arts education programming, scholarships and the Bi-annual Showcase.  The Bi-annual Showcase provides youth, ages 14-21 with a platform to perform their artistic works. Past Showcase participants have gone on to study at New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Conservatory and New York University to name a few. We also honor professional artists who exemplify excellence in the creative areas of Visual, Literary, Performing and Instrumental Arts.  Past honorees include:

  • Lula Washington- Founder and Artistic Director of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT)
  • Jewell Diamond Taylor- National Bestselling Author
  • Lady Sybil J. Thomas Coker- Founder of the Charles Dolo Coker Jazz Scholarship Foundation
  • Arthur L. Ross- Artistic Director/Creator of Bedazzled Productions
  • Phoebe Beasley- Artist, community activist, and two-time winner of the Presidential Seal Award
  • Rosemarie L. Cook-Glover- Director of the Southeast Symphony Association’s Music Conservatory
  • Tina Allen- American sculptor known for her monuments to prominent African Americans
  • Michelle Houston- Author, and illustrator of children’s books
  • Sylvester Rivers – Pianist, Composer, Arranger

As arts programs are cut from public education, we aim to bridge the gap for as many students as possible. Your generous support allows us to continue our community work which includes the Tri-Arts program at 54th Street Elementary School. Through this program, elementary students have performed in productions of the Lion King Jr., Once on This Island Junior and coming soon, “The Little Mermaid”.

Thank you for your partnership and support of talented youth.
